Lets take back birthing rights

Currently, women planning to birth in a hospital and some birth centers are being asked to wear masks while they labor and are being required to take an epidural to ensure “safety” should a c-section be necessary (c-sections are not related to COVID but some how they have piggy-backed on this whole debacle). C-Sections & Epidurals make more money than a non-medicated birth, it makes sense. 

Across the board women are also being required to take a COVID test upon check in and cannot receive care until they receive results. Last week a student of mine birth her baby in triage on the ground because the COVID test results took too long to procure. Since the test results still weren’t in they took the baby away and kept him until the results came back. And, they were negative.

In another scenario which happened to my client March 10, the hospital took the baby because the mother had been sneezing during labor. They took the baby to an isolated area and without the parents consent administered antibiotics to the baby. This is not a form of treatment for COVID nor is it acceptable by any means to do anything to a baby without express consent from the parents. I don’t care what state you live in. 

These are just two stories but there are more, and they are happening every day across the country.

It is instrumental for the success of breastfeeding and your recovery that you are not separated from your baby for the first few weeks after the birth, ESPECIALLY the first hours after birth. There is a symphony of hormones that occur right after the birth that you both need for chemical skin imprinting, CSI. If you miss that window you risk: 1. Milk never coming in 2. Postpartum depression 3. Lack of connection with your baby for life 4. Slower recovery
