BECOME AN UNCOVERING BIRTH EDUCATOR

No doula experience required

You don’t need to be a doula to enroll in our program.

Our certification is open to anyone committed to fostering a positive birth culture and supporting families through informed decision-making.

Birth educator vs. doula: Understanding the distinctions

When it comes to supporting families during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, both birth educators and doulas play crucial roles. However, these roles are distinct, each serving different needs and requiring different skill sets. Understanding these differences is essential for anyone considering training in these fields.

Birth Educator Training

Our Birth Educator Training is designed for those who wish to guide parents-to-be through a structured educational process, empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to navigate pregnancy, birth, and the immediate postpartum period.

As a certified Birth Educator, you will:

  • Teach Structured Courses: You’ll be certified to deliver comprehensive, evidence-based classes covering all aspects of pregnancy, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. Your role is to provide clear, accurate information that helps parents make informed decisions.
  • Focus on Education: Unlike doulas, Birth Educators do not attend births or offer emotional support outside of the classroom. Your primary responsibility is to educate, not to be present during the birthing process.
  • Specialized Scope: Birth Educators do not perform any duties for the birthing woman outside of teaching classes, unless they possess additional skills unrelated to their birth educator training. Your expertise lies in education, not in physical or emotional support during labor.
  • Provide Evidence-Based Information: You will be equipped to offer relaxation techniques, detailed explanations of the birth process, and strategies for navigating the complexities of pregnancy and childbirth, all within the framework of your structured classes.

Doula Training

In contrast, doulas are trained to offer continuous emotional and physical support to women throughout their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. However, it’s important to note that our Birth Educator Training does not qualify you to become a doula.

Doula Responsibilities:

  • Support During Birth: Doulas are present at live births, providing hands-on support to the birthing woman. Their role is deeply personal, involving direct involvement in the birthing process.
  • Emotional and Physical Support: They build strong relationships with their clients, offering emotional and physical support throughout the pregnancy, during birth, and into the postpartum period.
  • Educational Resources: While doulas provide valuable educational resources, they do not have the certification or responsibility to teach structured birth education classes. Their role in education is more supplementary.
  • Support Through Loss: Some doulas also support clients through miscarriage and loss if they have received specialized training.

Our Birth Educator Training is specifically designed to prepare you for a role centered on education. If your passion lies in teaching and empowering parents-to-be with evidence-based knowledge, this training will equip you with everything you need to become a certified Birth Educator. This path allows you to make a meaningful impact by providing structured, reliable information that helps families navigate their pregnancy and birth experience with confidence.
